first visit to island Storholmen

13 June 2026

Today is the first survey of goose nests on the largest island, Storholmen. I received the permit yesterday. I was afraid that the extremely early spring will soon cause nests to hatch. Mark Zedec of AWIPEV assisted me. Below he is making the above picture. The female had a nice ring yellow(DNA). Unfortunately she would not show it anymore.

We were also able to find the nests which were predated by polar bear visits last week. The poop still showing signs of bad digestion of proteins.

To leave the island, we had to wait for the tide to rise.

On our way back.

Finally a graph of the number of nests on Storholmen. Not as bad as I thought. The effect of the avian influenza epidemic is still visible. Last year had a good reproduction, but first year old geese don't breed. We saw several on the island, not linked to a nest
