second bird count along the coast

16 July 2026

This our second bird count in the fjord. Today Francois and Mark are running the boat for us. Here we approach Kongsvegen glacier. We keep a safe distance from the glacier and use the "rule of thumb": stretch your arm and the glacier front in the background of your view, should not be bigger than your thumb. With my binocular I can measure distance and we are never closer than 580 meters.

Voor de Kronebreen drijft veel ijs. Deze video geeft een indruk. Op dit ijs zien we nog twee baardrobben en een gewone zeehond.

This trip, we saw a lot of large icebergs floating in the fjord.

We have entered our counts in the database. The number of seabirds in this trip is 40% lower than the total number of birds in the first trip. Below you read what I think as potential explanations.
