DNA as a Method for Measuring Life in the Sea | 3 July 2025 |
Part of the marine biological research at the station in Ny-Ålesund involves collecting biological material for genetic research. We photograph the species, identify them, and then analyse them to determine their genetic code. The data will be uploaded to an international database, so researchers around the world can access and use them. It also means that we get some beautiful images of the species! The little jellyfish here in the harbor, for example, are stunning! We catch them using a bucket on a stick. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the freshwater ponds, lepidurus (tadpole shrimp – see pictures) and daphnia (water fleas) live. ![]() |
