passing glacierfronts | 7 July 2026 |
|
We are doing our first fjordcount in 2026. We pass along the inner coast of Kongsfjorden and count all birds within 200 meter from the coast and 200 meter on the other side of the boat. This trip brings us close to several spectacular glacier fronts. We are at the south side of Kongsvegen. ![]() The front of Kongsvegen, a relative stable glacier. ![]() The two glaciers are almost divided at Garwoodtoppen. The geology of this mountain shows nicely colissions from long ago. ![]() Kronebreen has a more restless front and a big river at the north side coming out of the glacier ![]() Returning along Colletthogda, there is a lot of floating ice and Rey and Sander push large blocks aside. We enter the small bay at Raudvika. This is the glacier at the northern corner. And this is Conwaybreen. In the 1950s the Kongsbreen was still connected to this glacier and the grey stones of the video had a glacier in front. This map is taken from https://toposvalbard.npolar.no/. We passed the glacierfronts from south to north. However today, the ice situation is very much different from the map and even from the picture. The bay at Raudviken is much bigger, and Kongsvegen and Kongsbreen are almost split at Garwoodtoppen, while most of the south side of Colletthogda is now free of the Kongsbreen | |
