This is my third time in the high Arctic of Svalbard and I feel closely connected to this unique environment. The consequences of climate change are clearly visible here by strongly receding glaciers and less frequent winter ice coverage of the west coast fjords.

I am back in Ny-Ă…lesund for the EPOCA Arctic Campaign 2010 to join a unique pelagic mesocosm study investigating the impact of Ocean Acidification on the Arctic plankton food-web. The focus of my work lies (1) on the beautiful sea butterfly Limacina helicina, a calcifying key-species in the Arctic Ocean and (2) on the biological pump and cycling of elements. I am proud to be part of this project, increasing our knowledge on the consequences of rising CO2 concentrations on marine ecosystem functioning and services in this vulnerable environment.
