Dark season

5 October 2016

Today, RenĂ© Bürgi (station engineer at AWIPEV) gave me 733 pictures of birds and me which he has collected in the past year. A wonderful set to use, especially for the period when I am not in town. This is such a picture, with the northern lights. The northern light is seen in the south as we are that far north that we are inside the ring around the magnetic pole. You can also see the lidar of AWI. The lidar is used to make a vertical profile of 30 kilometer and measures aerosols. It works almost like a radar, but now it is not radio waves but a laser beam, which is refelected.
